Have you ever noticed how the female leads in mainstream films are always "beautiful yet [blank]?" Beautiful yet independent, or beautiful yet brilliant, or beautiful yet down-to-earth, or beautiful yet feisty. It's as though, as a culture, we have acknowledged that there are other things to admire besides beauty, but we still can't stand to see the male lead fall for someone we wouldn't personally Google for topless images. It strikes me as some kind of half-assed feminism, which is why I really get a kick out of the "beautiful yet independent" cliche.
Animated films are among the worst offenders. I can't even think of the last mainstream (Disney) animated film I saw with a human female lead who wasn't physically idealized. Can we just not handle it as a culture, or what? Discuss.
